A bill which aims to ensure that more organ transplants take place, is set to pass its first reading in Parliament today with almost unaminous support.

The Member's bill -- sponsored by National MP Jackie Blue -- would set up a national donor register and give greater legal status to a person's decision to be an organ donor upon their death.

At the moment, family members can override that wish. But the bill as it is currently written, would ensure that could not happen.

However, Dr Blue accepts the select committee process may result in a change so there is some consultation with families.

The Maori Party is the only party voting against the bill; saying it does not believe in organ donation after death, as a body is considered sacred.
