Battle for organ donation goes on

A FORMER Newport man who has campaigned for five years to improve organ donation in his adopted country of New Zealand is still battling for a change in the law.

Andy Tookey said new figures released in New Zealand revealed there were just 25 organ donors in 2006 - less than the previous record low of 29 the previous year.

"The figures put New Zealand in between Iceland and Mexico for the number of donors it has, at just 6 donors per million of population," said Mr Tookey who emigrated with his family.

He established GiveLifeNZ which is campaigning for reform of the system and is co-authoring a proposed law change with an MP so family and doctors cannot overturn a person's wish to be a donor.
